US-based firm calledreens that has launched a new consumer health program to help patients afford their prescription drugs is testing a new version of its cholesterol-lowering drug, Crestor.
The company is planning to sell Crestor for about $6.5 million. But the move to launch a new program has come under pressure from the FDA, which said Crestor is the first of a new class of drugs that patients are eligible for.
The Crestor program, known as statins, is a long-term cholesterol lowering therapy that doctors prescribe to patients who have certain risk factors that can increase their risk of developing heart disease or certain cancers. Crestor is a brand name version of Lipitor, one of a group of cholesterol-lowering drugs, which is also sometimes called statins.
The move comes as the US health care system grapples with the problem of millions of prescriptions filled each year. A lack of affordable prescription options and the associated financial strain has put doctors at risk. By introducing a new program, the firm says it will have to spend up to 10 times the cost of the old cholesterol-lowering therapy, Lipitor, for the new program.
The company says it will also need to make a final cut in its plan to replace Crestor with the new cholesterol-lowering drug, or Vytorin.
"In some cases, it may not be possible to have the therapy discontinued because of the increased risk of side effects associated with Crestor, such as gastrointestinal bleeding and allergic reactions," said Dr. Scott Stoddart, a clinical professor at the University of Missouri and a former clinical instructor in cardiovascular medicine at Northwestern University School of Medicine.
"This is one of several innovative technologies that have been used to develop new drugs to address the problem of inappropriate use of prescription drugs," he said.
But the new program, called the Ad-Hematology-Crestor, is designed to help patients afford their medicines. It is not yet clear how the new Crestor program will work, but it will be available on the website in the fourth quarter of this year.
The new program will be available to those who qualify by filling out a form online. The online form will then be reviewed by a pharmacist or doctor who will write a prescription for Crestor. In some cases, the doctor may recommend that patients try the new program.
The program will be offered at Walgreens.com and the website, which are the latest in a series of acquisitions to the firm that have helped it grow.
"The move to launch a new program has been an interesting development for our company and it has had a significant impact on our patients," said Dr. Steven Nissen, chairman and chief executive of Walgreens, which makes the new Crestor. "We are pleased to have an opportunity to introduce our new program to our customers. It is important that patients do not buy expensive medicines without a doctor's prescription."
The new program will cost $6,000 to $7,000 per month. The cost is based on the cost of the older cholesterol-lowering medication. The new program will also include some discounts for those who qualify.
"We expect that patients will continue to benefit from the new program and it is our hope that this could bring some cost savings to those who are uninsured or underinsured," said Nissen.
The company's new program is expected to be launched later this year. It will cost about $1.5 million to $1.7 million annually. It will take place after the expiration of a previous program.
"It has been a tremendous development for our company, particularly with the increased availability of generic cholesterol-lowering drugs," said Stoddart.
"In the past, generic drugs were used to lower cholesterol and there was a huge market for these drugs," said Nissen.
For example, Pfizer Inc. has launched a generic version of Crestor at the same price it had been offered.
He said the new Crestor program is similar to the previous program and is not yet expected to cost as much as $500,000. It will cost about $2,000 per month.
"In terms of the cost of the Crestor program, I think we will start with the price, but I do think that the price will be more than that," said Nissen.
